Chitrakote is the widest waterfall in India — around 300 metres across on the Indravati river, which is why it is routinely called the Niagara of India, a comparison that is generous on height and fair on breadth. The season decides what you see: from August to October it is a single thundering brown curtain at full monsoon volume, while by December it has separated into several clear white streams over the horseshoe rock, which many people find more beautiful. By April it is much reduced. Boats take you close to the base when flow allows. Bastar district around it is one of the least visited parts of India and its tribal weekly markets are the real reason to spend a second night.
