Junagadh, at the foot of the sacred Girnar hills, is a layered old city of Buddhist caves, Ashokan rock edicts and the atmospheric Mahabat Maqbara mausoleum. Above it rises Girnar, a great pilgrimage climb of some 10,000 steps to Jain and Hindu temples, and the gateway to Gir's lions lies close by.
