Shillong has the hotels and restaurants; Cherrapunji has the root bridges and waterfalls. Two nights in Shillong with a day trip south works, though staying a night at Cherrapunji lets you start the Nongriat trek at first light.

Fly to Guwahati and drive roughly three hours. Shillong airport has very limited service, so most itineraries route through Guwahati.
