Kaziranga & Assam

Guwahati · Kaziranga · Majuli — The Assam that most people miss — Kaziranga, home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, paired with Majuli, the great river-island in the Brahmaputra, and the temples and river life of Guwahati. Kaziranga's grasslands genuinely offer some of the most reliable rhino sightings anywhere, though as always with wildlife nothing is guaranteed and the park closes through the flood season. Majuli is reached only by ferry across a river so wide it feels like the sea. Green, watery and refreshingly uncrowded.

Day 1 Arrive GuwahatiAirport → Kamakhya
  1. Private transfer & hotel check-in
  2. Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill
  3. Sunset Brahmaputra river cruise
  4. Overnight in Guwahati

Assam's gateway city on the Brahmaputra. The hilltop Kamakhya, among the most important Shakti temples in India, is the cultural set-piece; the evening river cruise on the vast Brahmaputra — genuinely one of the world's great rivers — is the gentle introduction to the water that defines this whole trip.

  3. Orientation & the fringe of the park at dusk

East along the Brahmaputra valley, tea estates rolling away on both sides, to the edge of Kaziranga. An afternoon to settle into the jungle resort and rest before the early safaris — the park's grasslands and wetlands begin right at the doorstep.

✓ Assam tea country✓ Kaziranga fringe

🛏 Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 3 Kaziranga safarisJeep & elephant safari
  1. Elephant-back safari in the central range (seasonal, quota-limited)
  2. Breakfast & rest
  3. Afternoon jeep safari (different range)
  4. Return to the resort

The heart of the trip. The dawn elephant-back safari — where it runs, subject to season and a strict daily quota — takes you across the grassland among the rhinos at close, quiet range; the afternoon jeep safari covers a different range with a chance of swamp deer, wild buffalo, elephant and, rarely, tiger. Rhino sightings here are genuinely excellent, but we still say honestly that no wildlife is guaranteed.

  4. Overnight in a Majuli eco-cottage

To Majuli, one of the largest river islands in the world, crossed by a fixed-schedule ferry over the immense Brahmaputra — the timings are the river's to keep, and we plan around them. The island's satras (Vaishnavite monastery-communities) keep alive a 500-year-old tradition of dance, chant and the extraordinary papier-mâché mask-making, and life here moves at the pace of the water.

Important information

  • Kaziranga is closed to safaris in the monsoon/flood season (roughly mid-April to October); the reliable window is November–April.
  • Rhino sightings are excellent here but, as with all wildlife, not guaranteed. Elephant-back safaris are seasonal and strictly quota-limited — we book early but cannot always secure a slot.
  • Majuli is reached only by fixed-schedule Brahmaputra ferries, which are weather- and river-level dependent; timings can shift.
  • Accommodation on Majuli is simple eco-cottage/guesthouse standard — comfort expectations should be honest.
  • Safari ranges and permits are allocated on the day subject to availability; carry a government photo ID.

Questions

Package FAQs

Will we see a rhino at Kaziranga?

Very probably — Kaziranga has one of the densest rhino populations anywhere, and sightings are among the most reliable of any Indian park. But it is still wild, so we stop short of a guarantee. A jeep and (seasonal) elephant safari across two ranges maximises your chances.

Is the elephant safari always available?

No — it runs only in season and on a strict daily quota, and is not offered when conditions or park rules don't allow. We book as early as possible and are honest that a slot cannot always be secured; the jeep safari is the dependable core.

When is Kaziranga open?

November to April. The park closes through the monsoon flood season (roughly mid-April to October) when the Brahmaputra inundates the grasslands.

Is Majuli worth the ferry and the drive?

If you want culture and river life, yes — it is a unique Vaishnavite island world found nowhere else. If wildlife is your sole aim, you could swap the Majuli nights for an extra Kaziranga safari day; we'll tailor it.

Are flights included?

No — flights to Guwahati (and optionally out of Jorhat) are booked separately for your dates. We can add them to the quote on request.
