Ooty & Kodaikanal

Ooty · Coonoor · Kodaikanal — The two great hill stations of the southern Western Ghats, paired on one gentle loop — Ooty and neighbouring Coonoor in the Nilgiris, with the heritage toy train, and Kodaikanal in the Palani hills. It is cool, green, unhurried and thoroughly family-friendly, built on tea gardens, lakes and viewpoints rather than a punishing schedule. The hill roads are genuinely winding (and Ooty and Kodai get busy at peak times, which we time around), but the reward is the eucalyptus-scented air and the layered blue ranges the "blue mountains" are named for.

  1. Meet at Coimbatore & drive up the Nilgiri ghat
  2. Check-in
  3. Ooty Lake boating & the Botanical Gardens

Up the famous 36-hairpin ghat into the Nilgiris — genuinely winding, so we take it steadily. Ooty, the "queen of hill stations," opens gently with the lake and the colonial-era Government Botanical Gardens. The eucalyptus and pine air is the first sign you've left the plains behind.

✓ Nilgiri ghat climb✓ Ooty Lake✓ Botanical Gardens

🛏 Overnight: Ooty

Day 2 Ooty & Coonoor toy trainToy train → tea country
  1. Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train (Ooty–Coonoor, subject to running/seats)
  2. Sim's Park & Dolphin's Nose viewpoint, Coonoor
  3. Tea-estate visit & tasting
  4. Doddabetta Peak — the highest in the Nilgiris

The heritage day. The UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a genuine steam/diesel toy train grinding through tea slopes and tunnels — is the star, ideally the Ooty–Coonoor stretch. Coonoor, quieter than Ooty, has the best viewpoints and tea estates; Doddabetta, the highest point in the range, gives the whole panorama on a clear day.

Long inter-hill transfer via the plains
  1. Depart Ooty, descending to the plains and up again to Kodai
  2. Arrive Kodaikanal & check-in
  3. Kodai Lake & the Coaker's Walk promenade

The one long day, honestly stated — the two hill stations sit on separate ranges, so the transfer drops to the plains and climbs again, around seven hours. You arrive at the Palani hills' Kodaikanal, the "princess of hill stations," in time for the star-shaped lake and the cliff-edge Coaker's Walk at dusk.

✓ Inter-hill drive✓ Kodai Lake✓ Coaker's Walk

🛏 Overnight: Kodaikanal

Day 4 Kodaikanal sightseeingPillar Rocks → valleys
  1. Pillar Rocks & Guna Cave
  2. Pine Forest & Moir Point
  3. Lunch
  4. Bryant Park & the lake
  5. Dolphin's Nose / Green Valley View (weather permitting)

Kodaikanal's full day among its dramatic granite viewpoints — the sheer Pillar Rocks, the atmospheric Pine Forest, and the valley overlooks that plunge into cloud. Mist can roll in and close the views at short notice up here, which we plan around and are honest about; on clear afternoons the drops are spectacular.

✓ Pillar Rocks✓ Pine Forest✓ Valley viewpoints

🛏 Overnight: Kodaikanal

Day 5 Kodaikanal at leisureLocal Kodai
  1. At leisure — lake cycling, boating or a nature walk
  2. Optional Vattakanal / Dolphin's Nose trek & Chettiar Park
  3. Homemade-chocolate & spice shopping on the bazaar

A deliberately open day — the hills reward one unscheduled morning. Cycle or boat on the lake, walk to the quieter Vattakanal viewpoints, or simply browse the bazaar for Kodai's famous homemade chocolate and hill spices. An easy wind-down before the descent tomorrow.

✓ Lake leisure✓ Vattakanal (optional)✓ Bazaar & chocolate

Good to know

Important information

  • Hill roads are winding — the Ooty ghat and the Ooty–Kodaikanal transfer especially; travellers prone to motion sickness should plan for it.
  • The Nilgiri toy train is hugely popular and seats sell out well ahead; we book early but cannot always guarantee a specific service.
  • Kodaikanal's viewpoints can be closed by mist at short notice — we time for the clearest hours and are honest about the weather.
  • Ooty and Kodaikanal get very busy in the April–June summer peak and on long weekends; we plan timings and stays around the crowds.
  • Carry warm layers year-round — hill evenings are cold even in summer.

Questions

Package FAQs

Is the toy train included?

A Nilgiri Mountain Railway joy-ride (typically the Ooty–Coonoor stretch) is built into the plan, subject to it running on your date and seat availability. Tickets are a small separate cost and sell out early — we book as far ahead as possible.

Do we really need both hill stations?

They have distinct characters — Ooty/Coonoor for tea and the toy train, Kodaikanal for dramatic granite viewpoints — so the pair makes a fuller trip. The trade-off is one long inter-hill drive, which we state honestly.

Is it good for families and older travellers?

Very — the sightseeing is largely drive-up with short easy walks, the lakes and gardens suit all ages, and the pace is gentle apart from the one transfer day.

When should we avoid?

Nothing is off-limits, but the April–June summer peak brings heavy crowds and traffic, and the monsoon (Jun–Aug and the Oct–Dec retreating monsoon) brings mist and rain. September and Feb–March are lovely and quieter.

Which airport should we use?

Coimbatore is nearest for Ooty at the start; Madurai is nearest for Kodaikanal at the end. Running the trip point-to-point avoids backtracking, which we build in.
