Shillong was the capital of undivided Assam and is now Meghalaya's, and it has a character quite unlike anywhere else in India — Khasi matrilineal society, a serious live-music culture that gave it the nickname the rock capital of India, and church spires rather than temple towers on the skyline. The town itself is congested and the traffic is worse than the size suggests; the pleasure is in the surroundings, particularly Umiam Lake on the way up from Guwahati and the Mawphlang sacred forest, where nothing may be removed, not even a leaf.
