Lachen, a high village in north Sikkim, is the base for Gurudongmar Lake — one of the highest lakes in the world at over 5,400 m, sacred to Buddhists and Sikhs. The drive up through the Chopta valley and yak pastures is one of the great high-Himalayan journeys (permits required).
