Jaisalmer is the only living fort in India — people still live inside the walls, which is what makes it interesting and also what makes it fragile. The city is small enough to see in a day and the desert beyond it is the other reason to come. Two nights allows a fort morning, a haveli afternoon and one night at the dunes without the whole trip becoming a drive. Note that it is genuinely remote: everything here costs an extra half-day of travel at each end, and the summer months are not a reasonable time to visit.
