Tips for Safe & Comfortable Hiking

Simple habits that make a trek safer and far more enjoyable.

A good hike is mostly good preparation. Whether it’s a day walk in the hills or a multi-day Himalayan trek, these basics keep you safe and comfortable on the trail.

Before you go

  • Match the route to your fitness — build up with walks beforehand rather than starting cold.
  • Check the weather and the trail conditions, and share your plan and expected return with someone.
  • For high-altitude treks, allow days to acclimatise and know the signs of altitude sickness.

Gear that matters

  • Broken-in, supportive footwear — blisters ruin more treks than anything else.
  • Layers you can add and remove; a waterproof outer; a hat and sun protection.
  • Enough water, high-energy snacks, a basic first-aid kit and a headlamp.

On the trail

  • Start early, pace yourself, and rest before you’re exhausted.
  • Stay on marked paths and turn back if the weather or your body says so — the summit will wait.
  • Drink regularly and eat little and often to keep energy steady.
  • Carry out everything you carry in; leave the trail as you found it.

For bigger treks

On serious routes, a registered local guide, the right permits and trekking-specific insurance are well worth it. If you’d like a mountain trip organised properly, see our mountain & hill holidays.
