Kohima is where the Japanese advance into India was halted in 1944, and the war cemetery on Garrison Hill — with its inscription about telling them of our tomorrow — is one of the most affecting places in the country. The other reason to come is the Hornbill Festival at Kisama each December, when all the Naga tribes gather in a purpose-built heritage village; it is genuine cultural exchange rather than performance, and accommodation across Kohima books out months ahead. Outside festival week the town is quiet and the surrounding villages, particularly Khonoma with its terraced fields and conservation history, are the draw. All visitors need an Inner Line Permit.
