India's oldest national park, established in 1936, and the birthplace of Project Tiger. It is divided into zones — Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi — and which one you get materially affects the experience, because they are allocated rather than chosen and permits are released on the park's own calendar. Dhikala is the prized zone and requires an overnight stay inside the park at forest rest houses that book out months ahead. Two safaris across two days give a far better chance than one. As with any tiger park, nobody can promise a sighting, and the operator who does is the one to avoid.
