Jaipur is the easiest introduction to Rajasthan and the reason most first trips start here. The old city is a planned eighteenth-century grid, which makes it unusually walkable by Indian standards, and the major sights sit close enough together that two nights covers them without rushing. What separates a good Jaipur trip from an average one is timing rather than itinerary: Amber Fort at opening is a different experience from Amber Fort at eleven, and the bazaars are worth an afternoon rather than a photograph. Three nights lets you add Ranthambore as a day trip or simply slow down.
