Chitrakote is the widest waterfall in India — around 300 metres across on the Indravati river, which is why it is routinely called the Niagara of India, a comparison that is generous on height and fair on breadth. The season decides what you see: from August to October it is a single thundering brown curtain at full monsoon volume, while by December it has separated into several clear white streams over the horseshoe rock, which many people find more beautiful. By April it is much reduced. Boats take you close to the base when flow allows. Bastar district around it is one of the least visited parts of India and its tribal weekly markets are the real reason to spend a second night.

When should I visit Chitrakote?
It depends what you want. August to October gives maximum volume and a single vast curtain; December to February gives clearer, separated streams and easier access. By April the flow is much reduced.
Is Bastar safe to travel in?
The main tourist circuit around Jagdalpur is routinely visited, but parts of the wider district have long carried security advisories. We check current advice before confirming any Bastar itinerary rather than assuming.
