Hampi travel guide & tour packages

The ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, spread across 26 square kilometres of boulder-strewn landscape that looks like nowhere else in India. It is a UNESCO site and it is enormous — the mistake most visitors make is treating it as a day trip from Bengaluru, which reduces one of the great archaeological sites in Asia to a rushed afternoon. Two nights minimum: one day for the Sacred Centre around Virupaksha, one for the Royal Centre and the Vittala temple with its stone chariot. Sunrise from Matanga Hill is the view people remember. Summer here is brutal and October to February is the only sensible window.

Hampi FAQs

Can I see Hampi in a day?

Not properly. It covers 26 square kilometres and a day trip means seeing perhaps a fifth of it. Two nights is the realistic minimum and we will say so rather than sell you a rushed version.

How do I get to Hampi?

Overnight train to Hospet from Bengaluru or Goa, then 13 km by road. Flying to Hubli cuts the journey but flights are limited.

Is Hampi too hot?

From March to June, yes — it regularly exceeds 40°C with no shade among the ruins. October to February is the only comfortable window.
