Mysore is the easiest South Indian city to like — compact, green, and considerably calmer than Bengaluru three hours up the road. The Palace is the reason most people come, and the thing to know is that it is illuminated with around a hundred thousand bulbs on Sunday evenings and public holidays, which is worth planning your visit around rather than discovering afterwards. Chamundi Hill gives you the city from above and the Devaraja Market is a working produce market rather than a tourist one. One night is enough for the palace and the hill; two if you want Srirangapatna or the Brindavan Gardens as well.

Sunday evenings and public holidays, for around 45 minutes after dusk. It is a genuine spectacle and the single best reason to time your visit deliberately.
Is Mysore worth more than one night?
One covers the palace and Chamundi Hill. A second lets you add Srirangapatna and the gardens without rushing, and Mysore is a pleasant place to slow down.
