Madurai travel guide & tour packages

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the Meenakshi Amman Temple at its centre is the finest example of Dravidian architecture anywhere — fourteen gopurams covered in thousands of painted figures, and a temple complex that functions as the city's living heart rather than a monument. The evening ceremony, when an image of Shiva is carried to Meenakshi's chamber for the night, happens daily and is worth staying for. Madurai is also a serious food city; the night market around the temple is where to eat. One night works, two if you want the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and Gandhi Museum unhurried.

Madurai FAQs

Can non-Hindus enter Meenakshi Temple?

You may enter the complex and see almost all of it. The innermost sanctum is restricted to Hindus, which is normal for major South Indian temples.

What time does the temple close?

It shuts for several hours in the middle of the day and reopens in the afternoon. Plan around it — a lot of visitors arrive at exactly the wrong hour.
