Pilgrimage city · Andhra Pradesh
The Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, on the hill above Tirupati, is among the most visited religious sites on earth and receives tens of thousands of pilgrims a day. Everything about a visit turns on the darshan booking: free queue tokens can mean waiting many hours, while paid Seeghra darshan slots are released online well in advance and sell out. Turning up without a booking during a festival period is the single commonest mistake. The hill is 22 km above the town by road, or a stepped walk of about 3,500 steps for those doing it as penance. Head-shaving is voluntary and widely practised. One night in the town is usually enough if the darshan slot is secured in advance.
