Tawang Monastery
Monastery · 3 hoursFounded 1680. Attend the morning prayers if you can.
Himalayan monastery town · Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang Monastery is the largest in India and the second largest in the world, founded in the seventeenth century and the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. Getting there is the commitment: the road from Assam crosses Sela Pass at around 4,170 metres and takes two full days each way, and it closes with snow. Every visitor needs a permit — an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals, which takes longer and is not always granted. This is a serious trip rather than an add-on, and anyone selling it as a short excursion has not driven it. Three nights in Tawang itself, plus four days of travel, is the honest shape of it.
What to see
Founded 1680. Attend the morning prayers if you can.
~4,170 m, with Sela Lake below. Closes in heavy snow without warning.
Near the border, additional permit required. Drowned forest in glacial water.
For the 1962 war. The evening sound and light show is well done.
Durations
Tawang works well as a 2–4 night stay. Tell us your dates and party and we'll price a tailored itinerary.
Good to know
Yes, every visitor does. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, which takes longer, must be applied for as a group in most cases, and is not guaranteed. Start early.
Two full days by road from Guwahati or Tezpur in each direction, over Sela Pass. Anyone offering Tawang as a short trip is not describing the actual drive.
