The battlefield of the Mahabharata and where the Bhagavad Gita is held to have been spoken, which makes it one of the most significant sites in Hinduism and, oddly, one of the least visited by non-pilgrims. Brahma Sarovar is an enormous water tank that fills with hundreds of thousands of people during the solar eclipse and Gita Jayanti; on an ordinary weekday it is calm and impressive. The Krishna Museum and the Kurukshetra Panorama give the context that the site itself does not, and are worth doing first. It works as a long day trip from Delhi or a stop on the way to Chandigarh and Himachal.

Can I visit Kurukshetra as a day trip from Delhi?
Yes — about three hours each way by road, or two by train. A night lets you see Brahma Sarovar at dawn, which is the better version.
When is Gita Jayanti?
November or December depending on the lunar calendar. Hundreds of thousands attend and the town is transformed; book far ahead if that is why you are going.
