The Golden Temple is one of the few places in India that is genuinely as impressive as photographs suggest, and it is at its best at night and again before dawn, when the crowds thin and the marble is cool. Entry is free, open to everyone, and the langar kitchen serves tens of thousands of meals daily to anyone who sits down — volunteering there for an hour tells you more about Sikhism than any tour. Jallianwala Bagh next door is sobering and takes twenty minutes. The Wagah border ceremony is a long afternoon and divides opinion sharply: it is either compelling theatre or uncomfortable nationalism depending on your temperament, and we will tell you honestly which we think you will find it.

Can non-Sikhs enter the Golden Temple?
Yes, everyone is welcome regardless of faith. Cover your head, remove shoes and wash your feet at the entrance. There is no charge for anything, including the meal.
Is one night enough in Amritsar?
It works if you arrive by early afternoon — Wagah, then the temple after dark, then dawn the next morning. Two nights is more comfortable.
