Cherrapunji travel guide & tour packages

Officially Sohra, and among the wettest inhabited places on earth — which is the paradox of visiting, because the rain that makes it famous also makes it invisible for much of the year. October to April is the window. The living root bridges are the reason to come: figs trained across streams by Khasi villagers over decades until the roots form a bridge strong enough to walk on, and still growing. The double-decker bridge at Nongriat involves around 3,500 steps down and the same back up, and it is a genuinely hard day that people routinely underestimate. The single-root bridges near Mawlynnong are far more accessible if that is beyond you.

What to see

Things to do in Cherrapunji

Double-decker root bridge, Nongriat

Trek · Full day

~3,500 steps each way. Genuinely strenuous — start at first light.

Nohkalikai Falls

Waterfall · 1 hour

India's tallest plunge waterfall. Best just after the monsoon; often cloud-hidden.

Mawsmai Cave

Cave · 45 minutes

Lit limestone cave, short and narrow in places.

Mawlynnong village

Village · Half day

Billed as Asia's cleanest village. A single-root bridge nearby is far easier than Nongriat.

Good to know

Cherrapunji FAQs

How hard is the double-decker root bridge trek?

Hard. Around 3,500 steps down and the same back up, humid, with no shortcut once committed. Reasonable fitness is essential and we will say honestly if we think it is beyond your party.

When should I avoid Cherrapunji?

June to September. It is among the wettest places on earth and the rain obscures the waterfalls it is famous for, while making the treks unsafe.
