The Great Rann is a salt marsh that floods each monsoon and dries into a white crust the size of a small country — walking out onto it at full moon is the reason people come, and it is genuinely unlike anywhere else in India. The Rann Utsav, a tented festival city, runs roughly November to February and is the usual way to visit, though it is a packaged experience rather than a wild one. What is easily missed is the craft: the villages around Bhuj hold some of the finest surviving embroidery, bandhani tie-dye, block printing and Rogan art in the country, several of them practised by a handful of families. Two nights lets you do both the salt flats and the craft villages properly.
