Aizawl is built along a ridge at around 1,100 metres and is unlike any other Indian state capital — overwhelmingly Christian, almost entirely Mizo, with among the highest literacy rates in the country and a Sunday when the whole city genuinely stops. Shops close, traffic thins and church choirs are the loudest thing you will hear, which is worth experiencing and worth planning around if you need anything done. The Mizoram State Museum and Bara Bazar give the cultural grounding; Durtlang Hills gives you the city laid out along its ridge. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit, and Mizoram is a dry state.

Why does everything close on Sunday in Aizawl?
Mizoram is overwhelmingly Christian and Sunday observance is near-total. Shops, most restaurants and many transport services stop. Plan arrivals, departures and shopping around it.
Do I need a permit for Mizoram?
Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit; Indian nationals no longer do for most entry points. Mizoram is also a dry state — alcohol is prohibited.
